Lewis & Clark College Howard Bridge

Portland, Oregon

More than a connection between Lewis & Clark College’s residence halls and undergraduate campus, this pedestrian bridge celebrates and preserves the densely wooded ravine it spans. Massive 12ft engineered wood trusses allow a clear span of the 188ft ravine, leaving the environmental zone below untouched. A wood deck and guardrails float within the larger structure and provide a finer scale for pedestrian experience. From afar, the mesh guardrail disappears, allowing the regionally-sourced wood structure to complement and contrast the vertical trunks of the forest.
